Robert Koenigsberger, Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of Gramercy,
has established the Gramercy Fellowship in Emerging Markets for the study of
developing countries in the Division of Social Sciences at his alma mater, University
of California San Diego.
The gift will be part of a multi-year fellowship with PhD recipients receiving awards
for a five year period and MBA and MPIA recipients receiving awards for a two year
period. Up to five individual awards will be made in the 2010 – 11 academic year.
Through the gift, Mr. Koenigsberger sought to ensure that UCSD is well positioned
to attract top graduate student talent as well as to support the school’s leadership
role in the study of developing countries. His study of Political Science and History of Latin America at USCD
left Mr. Koenigsberger well prepared for a career centered on emerging markets and
provided a strong base upon which he has built the successful business at Gramercy.
Gramercy is an underwriter of EMpower. In the past, Robert Koenigsberger served
on the U.S. Board of Directors.
EMpower's mission is to provide disadvantaged young people in EM countries with
the resources, skills, mentorship and opportunities to improve their lives and in
turn help better their families, communities, and the world around them.
They believe that young people:
- are the key to progress and stability in EM countries
- deserve the opportunity to achieve their greatest potential
- given the right tools, will succeed in improving their lives and the lives of
those around them, generation after generation
They also believe that cross sector partnerships are mutually beneficial for both
the private and public sector and allow for an enriching exchange of perspectives
and skills. To this end, EMpower strives to raise the level of awareness, involvement
and investment of the EM community in philanthropy and specifically in strategies
for development of healthier civil societies in the developing world.
EMpower - The Emerging Markets Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that
ties the resources of Emerging Markets (EM) professionals world-wide with the vitality
of community-based social sector initiatives in developing countries. Founded in
2000 by financial professionals from the emerging markets community who were “doing
well” and also wanted to “do good”, EMpower was created to make grants to local
organizations working to improve the lives of marginalized youth in EM countries,
and act as a bridge between those with resources and those who need resources. For more information on EMPower, please select the link below.

Gramercy is a proud financial supporter of the Hope for Poor Children Foundation,
which provides backing for organizations that operate throughout the impoverished
areas around the globe.
Hope for Poor Children Foundation is different from many other organizations in that it
does not directly operate in impoverished areas, but rather provides financial
backing to the most efficient, established and well-managed organizations dedicated
to helping the desperately poor youth of our world survive and flourish. Common
themes are safe drinking water, sanitary systems and education. All of the work
of the Foundation is done without charging any kind of fees or overhead.
Recent grant recipients include:
The Aquaya Institute; which develops innovative ways of providing clean drinking
water to poor families in the developing world.
The Grameen Foundation; which provides mezzanine capital to Micro-credit organizations
around the developing world, including Latin America, India, the Philippines and
Pakistan.
ORBIS International; which helps in fighting avoidable blindness in the developing
world.
Through employee donations and a corporate matching program, Gramercy proudly raised funds for the relief effort in Haiti.
